Social-OT Marketing Tips: Google Business

Why Your Therapy Practice Isn't Showing Up on Google Maps

November 01, 2026

You set up your Google Business Profile. You typed "pediatric OT near me" into your phone. And you didn't see yourself anywhere. Frustrating, but usually fixable once you know which problem you have.

Quick answer: Most therapy practices that don't show up on Maps have one of six problems: the profile isn't verified, it's suspended, there's a duplicate, the searcher is outside your area, the category or services are too vague, or the profile is new and quiet. Work through the checks below in order. For the full setup, see our Google Business Profile guide for therapy practices.

First, search the right way

Search your exact business name on Google Maps. If you appear for your name but not for "occupational therapy near me," your profile exists and the issue is ranking. If you don't appear even for your name, the issue is the profile itself. That one test tells you which half of this list to focus on.

1. Your profile isn't verified

Unverified profiles don't show up reliably. Sign in to your profile and look for a "Get verified" prompt. Google's verification help page says that if the button reappears, Google couldn't fully verify you and you'll need to try again.

2. Your profile is suspended

A suspended profile can stop appearing on Search and Maps. Common causes include keywords or a town added to the business name, a home address shown on a business families don't visit, or a virtual office address. Fix the cause first, then follow Google's steps to appeal a suspended profile.

3. There's a duplicate profile

Google says that if a profile is considered a duplicate, it won't show on Google Search or Maps. Duplicates happen when a previous owner, an old office manager or a past agency created a second listing. Search your practice name and old addresses, then claim or remove the extra one.

4. The person searching is too far away

Distance is one of Google's three main local ranking factors, alongside relevance and prominence, according to its local ranking help page. If you're testing from your home 25 minutes away, you're seeing different results than a parent near your clinic. For mobile practices, make sure your service areas are set up correctly and match where you actually go.

5. Your category or services are too vague

If your primary category is something broad like "Medical clinic," Google doesn't know to show you for "speech therapy for toddlers." Switch to the most specific category for your core service (here's how to choose your category) and list every service in the words families search.

6. Your profile is new or quiet

Prominence is how well known your practice is. Google says it includes your reviews and how many places link to you. A brand-new profile with two reviews and no photos is competing against practices that have been active for years. The fix is steady activity: a review habit that stays inside Google's rules, fresh photos, a weekly Google post, and replies to every review that never confirm someone is a client.

A 10-minute check you can do today

  • Search your exact business name on Maps from your phone
  • Sign in and check for any "Get verified" or suspension notice
  • Make sure your business name matches your real-world name, with nothing added
  • Confirm your primary category is the most specific one for your core service
  • If you're mobile, check that your address is hidden and your service areas are realistic
  • Search your practice name and old addresses for duplicate listings

One honest note: no one can promise you'll rank first. A clean, active, accurate profile gives you the best chance of being found. Fixing these issues and keeping the profile active is exactly what we do for clients, whether that's occupational therapy practices or pediatric therapy practices. Frequently asked questions

Why does my therapy practice show up for my name but not for "near me" searches?
Your profile exists, so the issue is ranking. Check your category, services, distance from the searcher and how active your profile is.

How long does it take a new profile to show up on Google Maps?
It varies. A verified profile can appear for your name fairly quickly, but showing up for general searches usually takes steady reviews and activity over time.

Can adding my town to my business name help me rank?
No. It breaks Google's guidelines and can get your profile suspended.

Does posting on Google help my practice show up?
Posts keep your profile active and give families useful information. They support your visibility alongside reviews, photos and accurate details.
